The inaugural DIVA Awards, sponsored by Heathrow Airport, have been hailed a huge success. They took place at London’s glamorous Cafe de Paris on March 23rd with people coming from near and far to celebrate 250 issues of DIVA magazine and the individuals who have made it the leading voice for lesbians, bisexual and trans women. Pauline Lewis, Head of Resourcing & Onboarding at Heathrow Airport was the winner of the 2017 Corporate Ally of the Year Award.
Pauline has helped transform the diversity credentials at Heathrow Airport. She was responsible for realizing Heathrow’s first women’s network: Altitude- High Flying Women at Heathrow, which continues to grow in power and has developed a framework for others to follow. There is increasing evidence that organisations with engaged staff are more dynamic, inventive and successful. Pauline supports having a recruitment policy built on values and diversity that will attract talented people to the employer, and make them want to stay.
Pauline is passionate about the work she does, “I love difference, I encourage it within my team. I believe that the world is a better place for all of our differences.” She has observed the change over the last 20 years, detecting that companies have gained a far better understanding of the benefits of diversity and creating a more inclusive culture. She does however feel there is still a long way to go: “At Heathrow we are at the start of our journey, but we have great executive sponsorship in our CEO who is fully behind our strategy. The best high performing teams I have seen are those that have got the broadest diversity mix.”
The DIVA Awards ceremony was hosted by L Word star Rachel Shelley who presented 15 awards to some amazing and inspirational individuals including actress Victoria Broom, footballer Lianne Sanderson and former DIVA editor Jane Czyzselska. Famous faces included the Absolutely Fabulous pair Jennifer Saunders and Harriett Thorpe, as well as Denise Welch, Sinitta, Gok Wan, Horse McDonald, Alsion Moyet and many more mixed with columnists, contributors and long-time DIVA subscribers, as everyone let their inner DIVA out for the night.
