Chris Tadoe
Vice President, Technology, , London Master of Engineering, Imperial College London

What inspired you to choose Morgan Stanley?

During my time at Imperial I had spoken to a number of alumni who worked at Morgan Stanley and each spoke very highly of the graduate training programme. The programme was unique in terms of the quality of the training and the once in a life time opportunity to start my career in New York. I was also attracted by the fact that even though Morgan Stanley is a financial firm, there is a culture of excellence in technology.

What do you do on the job? Describe a typical day:

I lead a team of developers in London and Montreal responsible for an electronic communications platform handling millions of interactions with clients every day. A typical day may consist of working with my development teams to understand any outstanding issues and to discuss priorities, architectural design and upcoming work. I would also meet with our global technology and business aligned partners to understand their requirements for future releases and discuss solutions.

What I love most about my job is…

the variety. Every day brings a whole new set of challenges, but the constant through it all is the great set of people that I work with. The fact of the matter is that it does not matter what level you are in the organization; your contribution and ideas are always encouraged.

My greatest achievement at Morgan Stanley was when…

I was commuting to work and overheard a gentleman excitedly showing his colleague a great new application he had on his iPad. It allowed him to access Morgan Stanley research on the go. This allowed him to review the latest research before he got to the office, giving him an advantage over some of his competitors. The colleague also commented that he was able to read the same content on his Kindle. My team’s content delivery platform, and the products of several other teams in my department, had made it possible for the company as whole to deliver for our clients.

When I am not at work, I am…

a musical director of a small choir which always seems to take more of my time than I realize!  I am also an organist so I have lots of weddings to keep me busy. Last, but by no means least, I spend time with family and friends.

Anisha Signhal
Equity Research, London

What inspired you to choose Morgan Stanley?

Having taken part in both the Spring Insight Programme and the Summer Internship, I gained a good insight into Morgan Stanley and the Equity Research department in particular. The culture of teamwork, hard work and the extremely smart people all inspired me to join as a full-time analyst.

What do you do on the job? Describe a typical day:

I work on the retail team in Equity Research which involves analysing companies and making recommendations to investors. My typical day starts by reading the news, specifically news that is related to the retail sector or the companies we focus on. I then convey the news and my views to our sales force and traders. The rest of the day could be a variety of activities such as thinking about a new idea for a report, meeting with clients to debate different stock recommendations, or meeting companies – that’s what keeps the job so interesting!

What I love most about my job is…

the opportunity to travel, meeting smart and interesting people and the constant learning.

My greatest achievement at Morgan Stanley was when…

I hosted my first client meeting by myself.

When I am not at work, I am…

seeing friends and family, going to the gym or going on holiday!

Executive Director, Technology,, Technology, London

What inspired you to choose Morgan Stanley?

As an experienced hire from outside the industry I had a preconceived image of what an investment bank was like—cutthroat and aggressive. As I progressed through the interview process, I discovered that this couldn’t be further from the truth at Morgan Stanley—everyone I met was incredibly approachable. What appealed to me the most about joining the Firm was the caliber of people and the nature of the work. Everyone was bright and driven and spoke passionately about what they did. I wanted to be a part of that.

What do you do on the job? Describe a typical day:

I always have to think on my feet and find creative and innovative ways to solve problems. Whether it’s answering a request for data from a Managing Director or helping someone in my team with a report, I have to ask myself, “Is this the most effective way to tackle this?” I see my job as helping our senior managers to focus on making important decisions rather than getting stuck in the weeds, so it’s important for me to be able to digest a lot of data and identify the key points.

What I love about my job is…

what I love about my job is the fact that it challenges me and forces me to keep pushing myself professionally and intellectually. Nothing stays the same for long here, so you’re never bored. I also appreciate having different career options available to me—in the time that I’ve been at the Firm, I’ve had three different roles and been able to work with many different people. Our people are what differentiate us as a place to work, and every day I learn something new from those around me.

Describe a time when your ability to easily access senior team members had a positive impact on your experience at Morgan Stanley:

I’m lucky enough to be in a role where I spend a lot of my time interacting with senior managers. I gain so much from just being around them and understanding how they think and how they approach their work. No one gets to a senior position without being extremely intelligent and working hard, so there’s always something I can learn.

My greatest achievement at Morgan Stanley was when…

it’s hard to pick one, but I remember feeling very proud—and yet terrified—when I spoke to the whole of our department in London about a career development initiative. I hadn’t been at the Firm long, and I presented the project to hundreds of people. Despite feeling very shaky throughout, it went well and I got a round of applause! Being part of that kind of culture where people are supported and encouraged to get involved in extracurricular activities is a very important part of working here.

When I am not at work, I am…

a mummy! I returned to work in March after maternity leave, and my baby girl is now nearly a year old.

Chris Duggins
Associate, Associate, Technology, London

What inspired you to choose Morgan Stanley?

When attending a presentation held by Morgan Stanley back when I was at University, I was impressed by the enthusiasm of the employees and enjoyed hearing about the vast technology infrastructure that underpins the business. After further research, it became apparent that the company also had strong philanthropic values and was involved in many charitable causes. I originally joined as a graduate in the Technology Analyst Programme, which is still one of the most prestigious technology programmes in the industry and gives its participants a great head start in their careers. I now enjoy being involved in recruiting new graduates into the programme.

What do you do on the job? Describe a typical day:

My first role was an infrastructure engineering role, where I was part of a team who were tasked with integrating a cloud based IT service management platform into the Morgan Stanley technology stack. I was responsible for data and system integrations, data warehousing and platform engineering. After 4 years in infrastructure I then took a mobility opportunity to work in an application development role in our trade allocations team. We run a high-volume system that takes in feeds of trade executions, aggregates them and allows clients to set up automatic allocation methods so that the trades can be allocated to client accounts, or manually allocate them through a rich desktop GUI. I work with the business on a regular basis to help organise and prioritise the development of new features/enhancements, and will either implement them myself (typically in Java), or manage the development of these items.

What I love about my job is…

the variety of projects I work on and the amount of training available. My role has involved working on and leading many engineering / development projects, which has enabled me to gain exposure to various technologies, work with internal clients and manage offshore developers. There is always opportunity to take training courses, and it is highly encouraged for employees to keep learning new skills. This is a great way of ensuring you have a motivated, best-in-class workforce.

Describe a time when your ability to easily access senior team members had a positive impact on your experience at Morgan Stanley:

There are many senior members on my team, and they can provide valuable insights into technological problems that can only be gained through experience. Senior managers across all teams are always willing to help where they can. When I worked on a research project regarding the potential impact of an internal social networking system, the CIO for Enterprise Infrastructure Technology was happy to meet with our team to discuss the topic in detail. In addition to gaining his knowledge on the subject, we were also provided with the names of further contacts in the company who had experience in that field.

My greatest achievement at Morgan Stanley was when…

I implemented a renovated platform to book end-of-day inter company trade movements. When clients are trading in different regions to where they are based (e.g. a client of Morgan Stanley in the US is trading on London stocks), we need to move the risk exposure between the two legal entities at the end of the day, for example from the London Morgan Stanley entity to the US entity. The previous platform which did this had various issues but we managed to resolve all of these which greatly freed up time for our Operations team. I managed to gain experience with new technologies and delivered a project for the business which had a clear monetary benefit.

When I am not at work, I am…

generally at the gym or playing some kind of sport. I love snowboarding, and a season in Canada has increased my desire to go as often as possible! I also play tennis on a regular basis and five-a-side football with work colleagues.
