This week is Business in the Community (BITC) Responsible Business Week where they are focusing on how businesses can make the digital revolution inclusive.
The digital revolution, which is taking place right now and is expected to continue to rapidly develop and grow over the coming years, offers many benefits such as, improving productivity, creating jobs, widening access to health and education, and improving the environment that we live in.
However, challenges also come into play with uncertainty around what impact there will be on the current nature of the workplace. What we do know is that there will be an increasing need for new digital skills and a commitment to lifelong learning as many already suffer a digital skills gap, including 72% of large companies and 49% of SMEs. Another challenge is retaining customers trust in technology with nine in ten internet users in the UK and US stating they would avoid a company which does not protect their privacy.
These challenges suggest an imbalance as older workers may be left behind in the new digital age, which is why BITC are concentrating on how companies can make the digital revolution work for everyone.
In collaboration with Accenture, Business in the Community developed a report entitled A Brave New World: Why businesses must ensure an inclusive digital revolution, which was launched in November 2016 as a call to action for UK businesses, NGOs and policymakers. The report highlights that it is only through collaboration and innovative approaches that businesses and the UK can fully benefit from the opportunities provided by the digital revolution.
In a recent second phase, Business in the Community and Accenture Strategy have created a list of priorities for responsible businesses in the digital age. These priorities are as follows:
1. Protect, support and empower customers
2. Embrace the changing nature of work
3. Deliver innovative products and services that serve society
4. Drive a transparent, inclusive and productive value chain
